MHT File

File extension .MHT
CategoryDocument File
DescriptionMHT (MHTML) is intended for archiving web pages and combining the HTML code and resources - images, animation, audio files, into a single HTML file. These resources are usually represented as external links. The content of resulting files is encoded in the same way as in HTML email messages. MHT files use MIME type encoding. MHT files are directly supported by Internet Explorer and can be opened in it. Also, they can be opened in Firefox and other browsers, providing users install add-on software.

Converting MHT news archives to PDF for permanent storage in our press clippings library replaced a manual print-to-PDF workflow. Occasionally footer spacing is slightly off, but content fidelity is high.

MHT to PDF Converter — Frequently Asked Questions ▼

Upload your .mht file to the CoolUtils converter and click Download. The converter decodes the MIME multipart structure, extracts the HTML content and embedded resources, renders the page, and exports a PDF that captures the page as it appeared when saved. Files up to 50 MB, no signup required.
Both .mht and .mhtml refer to the same file format — MIME Encapsulation of Aggregate HTML Documents (RFC 2557). .mht is the older 3-character extension used by Internet Explorer; .mhtml is the longer version used by Chrome and modern browsers. The file contents and structure are identical. The converter accepts both.
Firefox never supported opening .mht files directly. Chrome dropped native MHTML support in older versions and restored partial support later, but compatibility varies by platform. Modern Edge (Chromium-based) opens MHTML files natively. If the file was created by Internet Explorer — which Microsoft retired in June 2022 — converting to PDF is the fastest way to access the content on any current device.
The PDF captures the page content as it was rendered when saved. Static content — text, images, tables, layout — transfers accurately. Dynamic content that depended on live JavaScript (AJAX-loaded tables, real-time data feeds) was frozen at save time, so the PDF reflects that snapshot. Animated GIFs are captured as their first frame.
Yes. Both .mht files from Internet Explorer 5 through IE 11 and files from legacy Edge (pre-Chromium) are fully supported. These are the most common sources of MHT archives in enterprise and government environments, and the converter handles them correctly including embedded images, CSS styling, and standard web fonts.
The online converter processes one file at a time. For batch conversion of an MHT archive — for example, converting years of saved intranet pages or web evidence records to PDF for a document management system — use the desktop Total Doc Converter. It processes entire folders in a single run and supports command-line execution for automated archival pipelines.
The online converter supports files up to 50 MB. MHT files can be large because they embed all page resources in base64 encoding within the single file. A page with many images can produce an MHT file several times the size of the original HTML. For MHT archives exceeding 50 MB, use the desktop Total Doc Converter, which has no file size limit.

Convert MHT to PDF Online — Web Archives to Portable Document

An MHT file is a complete web page saved as a single archive — HTML, images, CSS, and all embedded resources packed into one .mht file. Internet Explorer created millions of them over two decades. The problem: IE is gone, and modern browsers do not open .mht files natively. Converting to PDF solves the compatibility problem permanently. The result opens on every device, in every browser, without any plugins or legacy software.

What Is an MHT File?

MHT (also written MHTML) stands for MIME HTML — a web archive format defined by RFC 2557. The format uses MIME multipart encoding to bundle the HTML source, inline images, stylesheets, scripts, and all other page resources into a single file. The .mht extension was the 3-character variant used by Internet Explorer 5 through IE 11, Windows Mail, and Outlook. Modern Chromium-based Edge and some Chrome versions use the .mhtml extension for the same format.
