GIF File

File extension .GIF
CategoryImage File
DescriptionDesigned by CompuServe even before JPG GIF file format displays indexed-color graphics. It is a simple illustration with maximum 256 colors. That is why it is great for the web, logos and icons also are saved in GIF format. There is one more reason for that: GIF preserves transparence. You can put an icon or a logo above another image, and the borders of the first one won’t be seen. Above all GIF supports animation, which is a widely spread technique among the designers.

Our portal only accepts PDF submissions, so converting GIF diagrams was a constant headache. This converter made it straightforward, though I'd like a drag-and-drop interface.

Used it to compile GIF-format screenshots from our monitoring system into a weekly PDF report — works perfectly and saves a lot of manual work in Photoshop.

GIF to PDF Converter — Frequently Asked Questions ▼

Each animation frame in the GIF becomes a separate page in the PDF document. A 15-frame GIF animation produces a 15-page PDF with one frame per page. The frame sequence of the animation is preserved in page order. PDF is a static document format and does not play back animation, but all frame content is preserved as static pages.
Yes. When multiple GIF files are uploaded, they are combined into a single multi-page PDF document in upload order. Each GIF image becomes one page (or, for animated GIFs, one page per frame). This is useful for assembling GIF diagrams, charts, or illustrations into a single paginated PDF document.
No significant quality loss. GIF already uses LZW lossless compression, and the pixel data is decoded and placed into the PDF without any additional lossy step. The 256-color limitation of GIF is a property of the source file — the PDF output preserves the GIF pixel values exactly, including any dithering in the original.
The PDF page is sized to match the GIF image dimensions. A 640×480 pixel GIF at 96 DPI produces a page of approximately 6.67×5 inches. The page size adjusts to each GIF's dimensions when combining multiple GIFs into one PDF.
Yes. The PDF output is print-ready and accepted by commercial print shops. However, be aware that GIF supports only 256 colors per frame, which may limit the print quality for photographic content. For better print quality, converting the GIF to a higher-color format (TIFF or JPG) before generating the PDF is recommended for professional print work.
If the converter supports custom page size settings, you can specify A4 or Letter as the output page size. The GIF image is scaled or placed within the specified page boundaries. Check the converter settings before converting to configure the target page dimensions.
The online converter handles multiple GIF file uploads. For bulk conversion of large GIF image archives or diagram libraries to PDF, Total Image Converter (Windows, $29.90) processes entire GIF folders to PDF overnight with configurable page and layout settings.

Convert GIF to PDF Online — GIF Images and Animations to Document Format

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) stores palette-limited images and frame-based animations in a browser-native format. PDF is the universal document standard — printable, archivable, and accepted by every document management system, court filing portal, and distribution platform. Converting GIF to PDF packages GIF images into a portable document: single GIF files become single-page PDFs; animated GIFs become multi-page PDFs with each animation frame as a separate page; multiple GIF files can be combined into a single PDF document. The result is print-ready, signable, and accepted everywhere documents are required.

What Is a GIF File?

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) was developed by CompuServe in 1987. It supports up to 256 colors per frame (8-bit palette), lossless LZW compression, and frame-based animation. GIF became the dominant web animation format in the 1990s and remains widely used for short animations and low-color graphics.

How GIF to PDF Conversion Works

The converter reads the GIF file structure, extracting each frame's palette, pixel data, and delay timing. For a single-frame GIF, the pixel data is decoded from LZW compression, converted from the 8-bit palette to a full 24-bit RGB grid, and placed into a PDF page at the specified output DPI. The PDF page size is set to match the GIF dimensions. For animated GIFs, each frame is processed separately and placed as an individual page in the PDF, preserving the frame sequence of the animation in page order. Multiple input GIF files are concatenated into a single multi-page PDF in upload order. The resulting PDF is a self-contained, print-ready, fully portable document compatible with every PDF viewer, print shop, and document management system.
