| Description | Designed by CompuServe even before JPG GIF file format displays indexed-color graphics. It is a simple illustration with maximum 256 colors. That is why it is great for the web, logos and icons also are saved in GIF format. There is one more reason for that: GIF preserves transparence. You can put an icon or a logo above another image, and the borders of the first one won’t be seen. Above all GIF supports animation, which is a widely spread technique among the designers. |

| Description | The TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is a widely-used file format for storing digital images, developed by Aldus Corporation (now owned by Adobe Systems). It is a versatile format that supports a wide range of color depths, resolutions, and image types, making it suitable for use in a variety of applications. TIFF files can contain multiple images, each with their own characteristics such as resolution, compression, and color depth. They can also be uncompressed or compressed using a variety of methods, such as LZW, ZIP, and JPEG compression. Additionally, TIFF files can store metadata such as keywords, descriptions, and copyright information. One of the key benefits of the TIFF format is its support for high-quality, lossless image compression. This makes it a popular choice for archiving and sharing images, especially in fields such as graphic design, printing, and photography. TIFF files can also support transparent backgrounds, making them ideal for use in web graphics and other applications where transparency is important. TIFF files can be opened and edited using a wide variety of software programs, including Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, and Microsoft Paint. They are also supported by many operating systems and web browsers. Overall, the TIFF format is a robust and versatile format for storing digital images. Its ability to support multiple images, high-quality compression, and metadata make it a popular choice for a variety of applications, especially those requiring high-quality images. |

GIF files are limited to 256 colours and designed for web use, not archival. TIFF supports full colour depth, is widely used in print and document workflows, and can store images losslessly. Converting GIF to TIFF makes the image suitable for professional production pipelines. Drop your .gif file above.
GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) was created by CompuServe in 1987. It supports up to 256 colours per frame using a palette-based LZW compression. GIF's animation support (added in 1989) made it the dominant animated image format on the web. GIF files use lossless compression within the 256-colour constraint, but reducing a photograph to 256 colours produces noticeable dithering. For animations and simple graphics with flat colours, GIF remains widely used despite the existence of APNG and WebP.
TIFF files can be extremely large but preserve every pixel without any quality loss. As a conversion target, TIFF is chosen when archival fidelity or print-quality output is required: scanning documents, rasterising presentations for print, or as an intermediate format in a production pipeline. Multi-page TIFF can store all document pages in a single file.
