| Description | WMF is a vector graphics file format featuring bitmap components and running on 16-bit operating systems. Files comprise a set of function calls, which command vector graphic and bitmap operations, such as drawing lines and other graphic elements, as well as vector images and sometimes raster graphics. The format was introduced with Windows 2.0 in 1988 and is still backed by some Windows applications, such as Windows Photo Viewer. Right now, WMF is less widely used, as it has been pretty much supplanted by JPEG and GIF. |

| Description | JPG is the file format for images made by digital cameras and spread throughout the world wide web. Saving in JPG format an image loses its quality, because of the size compression. But at the end you have a much smaller file easy to archive, send, and publish in the web. These are the cases when an image's size matters more than image's quality. Nonetheless, by using professional software you can select the compression degree and so affect the image's quality. |

Office users and archivists convert WMF legacy vector graphics to JPG to extract images from old documents into a universally viewable format that works on any device without Windows GDI support.
WMF (Windows MetaFile) is a 16-bit Windows vector graphics format, the predecessor to EMF. Introduced with Windows 3.x, WMF records GDI drawing commands (lines, rectangles, text, polygons) in a compact binary format. WMF graphics are common in legacy Word documents (.doc), older PowerPoint files, and clipart libraries from the 1990s–2000s. Outside of Windows, WMF has no native rendering support.
JPG (JPEG) is the universal format for photographic and general-purpose raster images. It uses lossy DCT compression to achieve small file sizes while preserving visual quality for natural images. JPG is supported by every browser, image viewer, email client, and mobile device. The .jpg and .jpeg extensions are identical — the same format with different file name conventions.
