| Description | PICT is a metaformat used for exchanging graphic data between Mac-based applications. PICT uses QuickDraw encoding and it stores both bitmap and vector graphic data. There are two types of PICT files: the obsolete PICT 1 supporting 8 colors and backed by the black-and-white QuickDraw, v. 1; and PICT 2 backed by QuickDraw 2 also known as Color QuickDraw. The format has been around since 1984 and now it has been largely replaced by PDF and has fallen out of use due to large size. |

| Description | PNG images provide lossless compression, that is why the quality of the picture is nice, but the size of the file is huge. Because of it this file format is used by photographers. PNG may have several layers of transparency and even include short text descriptions which help search engines to examine the file. Although PNG was developed to replace GIF and partly other formats, it doesn’t support animation since it can’t contain several images like GIF. |

PICT files from Classic Macintosh software are unreadable by any modern browser, image editor, or current macOS version. Converting PICT to PNG recovers the image content in a lossless, universally supported format — every pixel preserved, openable in any application without any Classic Mac OS requirement. Drop your .pict file above.
PICT (Picture Format) is Apple's classic Macintosh graphics format, used from 1984 through the Mac OS 9 era. It encoded QuickDraw rendering commands — lines, filled shapes, bitmaps, and text — replayed by the Mac's QuickDraw graphics engine. PICT was the default format for Mac clip art, HyperCard graphics, and desktop publishing through the 1990s. macOS X removed QuickDraw support, and PICT cannot be opened by any current platform without third-party software.
PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is the modern lossless raster format and open-standard successor to GIF. It supports color depths from 1-bit to 48-bit, an 8-bit alpha transparency channel, and DEFLATE lossless compression. PNG is universally supported by every browser, operating system, and image editor. For PICT images, PNG is the ideal lossless target — full color fidelity with no quality loss and maximum modern compatibility.
