What is a JPF file?

How is JPF different from JP2?

JP2 is JPEG 2000 Part 1 (ISO/IEC 15444-1, 2000). JPF is Part 2 (ISO/IEC 15444-2, 2004) — the extended profile that adds extra colour spaces, broader metadata, and additional component transformations. Many tools that support JP2 do not support the full JPF feature set.

Why convert JPF to PNG?

JPF is rare outside specialist archive, geospatial, and scientific workflows. PNG is the universal lossless image format every editor, viewer, browser, and document tool reads. Converting opens the image to general use.

Is the conversion lossless?

PNG is always lossless. If the JPF was authored in lossless wavelet mode, every pixel is preserved. If the JPF used lossy compression, the loss already happened in the source — the JPF to PNG step is lossless from the decoded pixels.

Does PNG keep JPF alpha?

Yes. PNG has a full alpha channel, so any opacity information in the source JPF is preserved.
