MSG is Outlook's individual message format, built on the Compound File Binary Format (CFBF / OLE2) Microsoft has used since the 1990s. Each .msg holds exactly one email — headers, body in plain text and HTML, embedded images, attachments, recipient lists, flags, and categories. Outlook and a handful of Outlook-aware tools open MSG natively; most other mail clients cannot.
PNG (Portable Network Graphics, ISO/IEC 15948) is the lossless raster image format from 1996. It uses DEFLATE compression and supports 8-bit indexed colour, 24-bit RGB, and an alpha channel for transparency. PNG preserves every pixel without loss, which is exactly what you want for text and line art. Every browser, editor, document tool, and operating system renders PNG natively.
