ODS (OpenDocument Spreadsheet) is the spreadsheet format of the OpenDocument standard (ISO/IEC 26300), used natively by LibreOffice Calc, Apache OpenOffice Calc, and Google Sheets. ODS files store data in cells organized into sheets, support formulas and functions, and can contain charts and named ranges. It is the open-standard alternative to Excel's XLSX format, but many submission systems and word processing workflows do not accept it.
DOC is the Word Binary Format used by Microsoft Office 97-2003 and accepted by all current versions of Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, Apple Pages, and Google Docs. When ODS data is converted to DOC, spreadsheet tables become formatted Word tables — reflowable, editable, and embeddable in reports and correspondence. DOC is the go-to output when a recipient or system requires a word processing file rather than a spreadsheet.
