XPS is Microsoft's fixed-layout document format — similar to PDF but tied to the Windows ecosystem. Most recipients do not have an XPS viewer, and the format cannot be edited at all. XPS (XML Paper Specification) is Microsoft's fixed-layout document format, introduced with Windows Vista as an alternative to PDF. It stores page content as XML and XAML inside a ZIP container, preserving fonts, colors, and layout with high fidelity. XPS files are created by Windows' built-in XPS Document Writer print driver. The format never achieved broad adoption outside Windows, and most non-Windows systems lack a native XPS viewer entirely.
Doc (DOC) is Microsoft Word's binary document format, supported by Word, LibreOffice Writer, and Google Docs on every platform. Unlike XPS, a DOC file is fully editable: you can change text, reformat paragraphs, add comments, and track revisions. Converting XPS to Doc unlocks the content for editing and makes it shareable with anyone who has a standard word processor.
