PST files are Outlook's proprietary mailbox format — locked to Microsoft's ecosystem. EML is the open standard that every email client understands: Thunderbird, Apple Mail, Gmail, Postfix, and any mail system you might migrate to. Converting PST to EML liberates your emails from Outlook's format, making them portable, archivable, and importable into any client.
PST (Personal Storage Table) is Microsoft Outlook's proprietary file format for storing emails, contacts, calendar events, tasks, and notes locally on a PC. PST files can grow to tens of gigabytes and are only fully supported by Microsoft Outlook. They cannot be imported into Thunderbird, Apple Mail, Gmail, or other clients without conversion. PST files are also notorious for corruption when they exceed 2 GB (old format) or 50 GB (Unicode format).
EML is the standard email file format defined by RFC 2822. Each .eml file contains one complete email — headers, body, inline images, and attachments — in plain text with MIME encoding. EML is supported by virtually every email client: Thunderbird, Apple Mail, Windows Mail, Gmail (import), eM Client, The Bat!, and most enterprise email systems. EML files can also be opened in any text editor for inspection or legal review.
