MP4 compresses audio to save space. WAV stores audio uncompressed. For everyday listening, MP4 is fine. For audio editing — podcast production, voiceover cleanup, music mastering, forensic audio — WAV is the correct working format. Every edit on a WAV is lossless; every edit on a compressed audio track accumulates artifacts.
MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is a multimedia container format that packages video, audio, subtitles, and metadata into one file. It uses lossy compression — typically AAC for audio and H.264 for video — to achieve small file sizes. MP4 is the default output of smartphones, screen recorders, YouTube, and streaming services. The audio inside an MP4 is always compressed, meaning information has already been discarded from the original signal.
WAV (Waveform Audio File Format) stores raw uncompressed PCM audio — every sample exactly as captured, with no information removed. Developed by Microsoft and IBM in 1991, WAV is the standard interchange format for professional audio: recording studios, broadcast systems, DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations), and forensic audio labs all use WAV as their working format. The tradeoff is file size: one minute of stereo 44.1 kHz WAV is about 10 MB versus 1 MB for the equivalent MP3.
