| Description | AVI is a format intended for combining and synchronizing audio and video during playback. AVI is used by a variety of players, including KMPlayer, Windows Mediaplayer, VLC player. Uncompressed AVIs show excellent video/audio quality and do not necessitate installation of any additional codecs. However, sharing these files is very difficult because of large file size. XvidX and DivX codecs pretty much solve the problem, as they ensure effective compression that will not affect quality. Many users choose to change AVIs into other compact and versatile file types. |

Plenty of older players, set-top boxes, in-car DVD units, and pre-2010 Smart TVs refuse to read MP4 but happily play AVI. Converting MP4 to AVI repackages your modern footage into the Microsoft Audio Video Interleave container so those devices can finally read it. Drop your .mp4 file above.
MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is the 2003 ISO container that bundles H.264 or H.265 video with AAC audio. It is the default output of phones, screen recorders, OBS, YouTube downloads, and every modern non-linear editor. Native playback exists on Windows 10/11, macOS, iOS, Android, and every HTML5 browser. The format relies on relatively modern codecs that older firmware — DVD players from 2005, in-car head units from 2008, early Smart TVs — does not recognise.
AVI (Audio Video Interleave) is Microsoft's video container, released with Video for Windows in November 1992. It is one of the oldest video formats still in regular use. Internally it interleaves video and audio chunks in a RIFF structure. AVI typically carries DivX, XviD, MPEG-4 ASP, or older codecs like Cinepak. Native support exists in Windows Media Player from every Windows version since 1992, and in essentially every hardware video player ever built. The trade-off: AVI lacks modern features like subtitle tracks, chapters, and proper variable-bitrate audio.
