DescriptionDBF is a standard used for storing and sending/receiving database, and it can be done with the help of a variety of database-oriented programs. Each DBF features a header outlining the file scheme, and so called records arranged in a table-like manner. These records are flagged with a byte supplying the piece of data with a byte mark to distinguish it either as subject to removal or not. In case this mark is a space, the object will remain in the file. The asterisk mark defines the record as subject to deletion. It is not impossible to bring back a deleted element unless it has been commanded to be removed irreversibly.

What is a DBF file and where do they come from?

DBF (dBASE File) is a legacy tabular database format from the 1980s. It is still produced by legacy accounting software, FoxPro applications, and GIS tools — Esri shapefiles include a .dbf file containing attribute data for each geographic feature.

Will all my column names and data types be preserved?

Yes. DBF field names become column headers in the XLSX output, and data types (text, numeric, date, logical) are mapped to the appropriate Excel cell types.

Can I open a DBF exported from a GIS shapefile?

Yes. The .dbf component of an Esri shapefile is a standard dBASE III table and is fully supported by this converter. Upload the .dbf file directly — you do not need to upload the .shp or .shx files.

What character encoding does the converter handle?

Most DBF files use DOS code pages (CP437, CP850) or Windows-1252 encoding. The converter attempts to detect the encoding from the DBF header. If special characters appear garbled, the desktop version lets you specify the source code page explicitly.

Is there a record count limit for the online converter?

The 50 MB file size limit applies. A typical DBF record with 20 fields and text data holds roughly 50,000–200,000 records within that limit. Very large tables require the desktop tool.
