XLSX File

File extension .XLSX, .EXCEL
CategoryDocument File
DescriptionXLSX is a format from Office Open XML family, a native MS Excel file type starting from version 2007. As opposite to XLS, this format uses ZIP compression that makes XLSX files smaller in size. Actually XLSX file is an archive of XML-documents. The cells in XLSX table can contain plain text, formulas or graphic elements. XLSX can be read in MS Office 2007 and later, Universal Viewer, OpenOffice, MS Office Excel Viewer, Corel WordPerfect Office. This format doesn’t support macros.

XML File

File extension .XML
CategoryDocument File
DescriptionXML is a versatile kind of language, which resembles HTML. Although they seem to have pretty much in common, as both are based on tags and define documentsí content and structure, they cannot replace each other. First, HTML demonstrates data, while XML describes it. Second, HTML uses standard tags, while XML does not use any, and users who write XML documents actually invent them. XMLs appear to be simpler and more flexible than HTMLs, and they present a very consistent way of sharing information. Meanwhile, these files bear static data, which cannot be rendered without a piece of software.

Our ERP system ingests product catalog updates as XML and the source data lives in Excel — this converter produced well-formed XML with each row as an element and column headers as tag names, ready to upload.

I handle data migration between a legacy Excel-based system and a new XML-driven platform; the converter saved two days of manual XML authoring for a 1,500-row product table.

We send purchase order data to a supplier via XML feeds — building those feeds from the Excel sheets our buyers maintain used to require a custom macro; this converter replaced that step entirely.

XLSX to XML Converter — Frequently Asked Questions ▼

The first row of the active sheet is treated as the column header row. Each header value becomes the name of a child XML element. Each subsequent data row is wrapped in a <row> parent element containing one child element per column. The entire dataset is wrapped in a root <data> element. For example, a sheet with columns ProductID, Name, and Price produces <row><ProductID>...</ProductID><Name>...</Name><Price>...</Price></row> for each record.
The online converter processes the first (active) worksheet only. If your XLSX file contains data across multiple sheets, convert each sheet separately by saving it as a standalone XLSX file first. Total Excel Converter (desktop, $29.90) supports a /Sheet parameter to specify which sheet to convert, or can export all sheets to separate XML files in one command.
Calculated values are exported, not formulas. The converter reads the last calculated result stored in the XLSX file for each formula cell and writes that value to the XML output. This is the correct behaviour for data interchange: recipient systems expect actual data, not Excel formula syntax.
The output is UTF-8 encoded with the declaration <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>. Characters from all language scripts — Cyrillic, Arabic, Chinese, Latin Extended, and others — are preserved. Characters that are special in XML (&, <, >, ") are automatically escaped to &amp;, &lt;, &gt;, and &quot;.
The online converter works well for files up to 50 MB, which typically covers spreadsheets with up to around 100,000 rows of numeric and short-text data. For larger datasets — for example, a transaction history export with 500,000+ rows — use Total Excel Converter (desktop), which processes the file row by row without loading the entire spreadsheet into memory.
The online converter produces a generic, flat XML structure without namespaces. If you need namespace-prefixed elements or a specific XML schema (for example, to match a SAP IDOC format, UBL invoice schema, or ISO 20022 message structure), use Total Excel Converter with a custom XSL template that transforms the intermediate XML to your required schema.
The online converter handles one file per session. For bulk conversion, use Total Excel Converter ($29.90 for a personal licence): TotalExcelConverter.exe C:\spreadsheets C:\xml_output /ConvertTo xml /ProcessRecursively. It converts all XLSX files in a folder tree and can be run from a command-line scheduler or integrated into a data pipeline. A 30-day free trial is available with no registration required.

Convert XLSX to XML Online

Excel spreadsheets are built for human data entry and analysis — but APIs, ERP import pipelines, and web services require XML and cannot consume XLSX directly. Upload your spreadsheet and download a well-formed XML file in seconds.

What Is XLSX?

XLSX is the Open XML spreadsheet format used by Microsoft Excel since Office 2007. It stores cell values, formulas, charts, pivot tables, and formatting in a ZIP-based XML container. XLSX is the standard format for human-managed data — budgets, inventories, HR records, and financial models — because Excel's interface makes data entry and analysis easy. However, XLSX is not a data interchange format: APIs, ERP systems, and web services expect XML, not binary or zipped spreadsheet files.

What Is XML?

XML (Extensible Markup Language) is the universal format for structured data interchange. It is the required input for SOAP web services, SAP and Oracle ERP import pipelines, ISO 20022 financial messaging, e-commerce product catalog feeds, and most enterprise integration protocols. XML supports hierarchical data, attributes, namespaces, and XSD schema validation — capabilities that XLSX does not provide. Converting XLSX to XML bridges the gap between Excel-based data management and system-to-system integration.
