| Description | OGG files store compressed audio signal. The sound is encoded with Ogg Vorbis compression algorithm. OGG resembles MP3 but provides better sounding compared with MP3 track of the same size. It may contain audio meta data such as information about performer and track parameters. Being a container for storing audio information OGG can contain different sound compression types like FLAC or Speex. OGG file extension may also refer to Salt Lake city game or OriginLab graphic files. |

OGG Vorbis is the preferred audio format for open-source games, Linux systems, and Android apps. But iOS devices, car infotainment systems, and iTunes do not support OGG natively. MP4 audio (AAC in an MPEG-4 container, .m4a) is the native audio format for the Apple ecosystem and is recognized by virtually every car stereo that supports "AAC" or "MPEG-4 Audio." Converting OGG to MP4 makes your audio files accessible on any Apple device, modern car stereo, or iTunes library without extra apps. Drop your .ogg file above.
OGG Vorbis is a patent-free, open-source audio codec developed by the Xiph.Org Foundation, released in 2000. The .ogg file extension is the container; Vorbis is the codec inside. It provides quality comparable to AAC and MP3 at similar bitrates, with no licensing fees. Typical OGG Vorbis files range from 64 kbps to 500 kbps (variable bitrate).
OGG is natively supported by Android, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, VLC, and virtually all Linux audio software. Game engines (Godot, Unity, Unreal Engine) use OGG for in-game audio assets. Steam distributes game soundtracks as OGG. However, Apple's platforms — iOS, macOS Safari, iPhone, iPad — do not support OGG, and most car stereos with "MP3/AAC" support lists do not include it either.
MP4 audio typically refers to AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) encoded inside an MPEG-4 container, saved with the .m4a extension. AAC was standardized by the ISO in 1997 and adopted by Apple as the iTunes and iPhone audio format in 2003. It achieves better quality than MP3 at the same bitrate.
.m4a files play natively on every iPhone, iPad, iPod, and Apple TV. iTunes and Apple Music use .m4a as the library format. Car infotainment systems from Toyota, Honda, BMW, and Ford that list "AAC" or "MPEG-4 Audio" in their format support play .m4a files from USB drives. Android plays .m4a natively as well, making it the broadest-compatibility audio container available.
