MKV is not widely supported by older consumer electronics, which is why conversion to AVI or MP4 is often needed.
AVI (Audio Video Interleave) was introduced by Microsoft in 1992 and became the dominant PC video format throughout the 1990s and 2000s. Despite its age, AVI remains the most compatible format for older consumer electronics: DVD players, car media systems, and early-generation smart TVs all support AVI where they refuse MP4 or MKV. AVI uses DivX, Xvid, or MPEG-4 video codecs and MP3 or AC3 audio, all supported broadly across hardware and software.
