Why can't I just open the WPS file in Word?

Microsoft removed WPS format support from Word starting with Word 2013. Current versions of Microsoft 365, Word 2019, and Word 2021 cannot open .wps files. Word 2010 and earlier versions could. If you need to open WPS files in current Word, converting to RTF or DOCX first is required.

Does LibreOffice open WPS files without conversion?

LibreOffice Writer can open many WPS files directly. Install LibreOffice (free) and try File → Open with the .wps file. For simple WPS documents (text with basic formatting), LibreOffice often renders them correctly. For complex formatting, tables, or special Works elements, the rendering may be imperfect. If LibreOffice fails, the online converter provides an alternative extraction path.

What formatting is preserved when converting WPS to RTF?

Text content, paragraph formatting (alignment, indentation, line spacing), character formatting (bold, italic, underline, font name and size), numbered and bulleted lists, and basic tables are preserved in the RTF output. Works-specific embedded objects (Works charts, Works spreadsheet links, Works database links) have no RTF equivalent and are omitted.

Can I then convert the RTF to DOCX for use in modern Word?

Yes. Once you have the RTF, open it in LibreOffice Writer and use File → Save As → DOCX, or open it in Word (RTF is supported by all Word versions) and save as DOCX. This two-step path — WPS to RTF to DOCX — produces an editable Word document from an otherwise inaccessible WPS file.

What if the RTF output has garbled characters or encoding issues?

WPS files created in non-English versions of Works may use regional character encodings. If the RTF output has garbled characters for accented or non-Latin text, the converter may need the source encoding hint. Try setting the page code to the language of the original document (e.g., Windows-1252 for Western European, Windows-1251 for Cyrillic) in the converter settings if available.

Is the conversion completely accurate?

Accuracy depends on document complexity. Simple Works documents — letters, memos, basic reports with paragraph text and simple tables — convert accurately to RTF. Documents with heavy Works-specific elements (embedded charts, Works database fields, custom macros) convert with reduced fidelity. Always review the RTF output, especially for business-critical content.
