The converter identifies the NEF file structure and applies Nikon-specific sensor decoding — reading the black level, white level, and color filter array pattern for the specific camera model. Demosaicing converts the Bayer single-channel sensor mosaic into a full three-channel RGB image using the white balance metadata and Nikon camera color matrix embedded in the EXIF for accurate color reproduction. If the NEF is lossless compressed, the compression is decoded first to recover full sensor data. The calibrated 16-bit RGB pixel data is written into the TIFF container with LZW lossless compression, preserving every bit of tonal information.
